Course formats - in-person, written feedback and online live critique

Our Course Formats

All three IWC course formats share the same craft-focused curriculum and teaching approach. What differs is where you meet, how feedback happens, and how class time is structured. Below we've outlined the key features of each format so you can choose the one that best fits your situation, priorities, and learning style.

In-Person Courses

Immersive, energising, and deeply communal

Best for: Writers near Amsterdam or The Hague who want the motivation and connection of a physical classroom.

  • Capped at 9 students
  • 2 to 2.5 hour sessions (level dependent)
  • Live feedback on your work during class
  • Around 30 minutes of dedicated craft discussion each session

Over eight weeks, you’ll get to know your peers and their work deeply, creating accountability and a sense of community.

Pricing: In-person courses are our premium format because they include venue costs and provide an extended, immersive classroom experience.

Online Courses with Written Critique

Flexible, reflective, and craft-focused

Best for: Writers who value time to think before responding, prefer to process feedback in writing, or need to balance learning with a busy schedule.

  • Capped at 10 students
  • 1 hour live craft discussion per week (using Zoom)
  • Written feedback from your teacher and peers
  • Students critique two submissions from other students per week
  • Sessions (video) recorded for flexible attendance

This format emphasises careful reading and considered response. The written critique allows you to process feedback at your own pace, revisit comments as you revise, and engage in deeper craft conversations during live sessions. It’s also ideal if you can’t attend every class in real time.

Pricing: This is our most economical option because feedback happens asynchronously and the active teaching time is shorter.

Online Courses with Live Critique

Conversational, intimate, and location-independent

Best for: Writers who want real-time dialogue and group connection from the comfort of home.

  • Capped at 8 students
  • 2 to 2.5 hour sessions (level dependent)
  • Live verbal feedback in class (using Zoom)
  • Approximately 30 minutes of dedicated craft discussion
  • Sessions (video) recorded (live attendance required to receive feedback)

This format brings the immediacy and warmth of the in-person classroom into an online space. The live critique keeps sessions dynamic and collaborative, while the small group size ensures every writer receives focused attention.

Pricing: Real-time feedback for each writer requires longer live sessions and a smaller class size, so these courses cost more than our regular online offering.
